Day Boat Hire Conditions / Rules:
How far can I go?
Linton lock is the furthest point and will take approx. 3 hours, Naburn lock will take approx. 20 mins.
Do I need a licence?
You don’t need a licence to drive a boat. However, there are a few basic rules you need to follow. These will all be explained to you on the day.
Is there an age restrictions for hiring a boat?
The main hirer must be aged 18 years or over. Identification must be shown with proof of address at request.
Can I drink alcohol?
You are not allowed to drink alcohol whilst hiring a boat. It is an offence under local bye-laws and you could be prosecuted along with your insurance being void. Please do not arrive with large quantities of alcohol as you will be asked to leave it behind. It is OK however for your passengers onboard to drink.
Where can I moor up?
The most popular moorings are those closest to waterside pubs, restaurants, and museum gardens in the centre of York.
Will I need to re-fuel the boat?
Every boat is handed over with a full tank of fuel which is plenty enough for a full day hire. Any additional fuel required will be at the expense of the Hirer. There is a petrol station situated at Naburn Marina which is situated 20 mins away.
What do I need to bring with me?
Wear suitable clothes and shoes. We all know how unpredictable the great British weather can be you may want to consider bringing a waterproof coat or umbrella just in case! If it’s a sunny day, drinking water, sunglasses, sun cream and a hat are always useful things to bring. A camera. A fully charged mobile phone in case of emergency.
I'm on holiday – where can I stay in the area?
We have a caravan and motorhome onsite as well as other cabins and shepherd's huts available - all of which is bookable through this website.
Can I bring my dog along?
Yes dogs are welcome on the boats. There is an additional charge to cover cleaning costs, £10 for one dog and £15 for 2 dogs or more. Please be aware that pets are not covered under the Company’s insurance policy so it would be at the Hirers risk and the Hirer shall be liable for the cost of any damage.
What happens if the weather is really bad on the day of my hire or the river is in flood?
We pride ourselves on giving our customers flexibility, therefore in very bad weather conditions, or if the river is in flood, you will have the opportunity to reschedule your booking. You will have 12 months from the date of hire to re-use your booking. If it is just light showers then we recommend you simply pack a raincoat and hat.
Can I go through locks?
Our boats have a river licence only, not a canal licence, therefore the cruising area is between Naburn lock and Linton lock.
