At The Riverfront in Bishopthorpe, sustainability is more than just a buzzword; it's a way of life. Our primary aim is to be Net Zero by the end of 2026. Here are some of the key sustainability efforts we've already implemented, and others we have planned, to achieve that goal:
Renewable Energy: We've invested in renewable energy sources, reducing our reliance on non-renewable energy sources and lowering our carbon footprint. We are in the process of introducing solar panels on the roof of our restaurant, Bosun’s, as well as our larger Unique Stay, The Ark. Our ultimate aim is to make the caravan park entirely self-powered during the summer months.
Waste Reduction: We're committed to minimising waste generation by implementing recycling programs throughout our facilities and encouraging visitors to dispose of waste responsibly. Additionally, we strive to reduce single-use plastics by offering reusable alternatives and promoting sustainable practices. All our food sold at the Café Bar is served on cardboard trays with wooden cutlery.
Eco-Friendly Infrastructure and Water Conservation: From energy-efficient lighting to water-saving fixtures, we've incorporated eco-friendly infrastructure into our buildings and facilities to minimise resource consumption and promote sustainable living. We have invested in LED lighting throughout The Riverfront site and water butts are being installed across the site too.
Sustainable Transportation: Whilst visiting The Riverfront, we encourage our guests to use sustainable transportation options such as walking, cycling, or public transport, and are installing more bike racks across the site.
Conservation Initiatives: We're actively involved in conservation efforts to protect the natural beauty and biodiversity of the riverfront area. This includes habitat restoration projects, native planting initiatives, and wildlife monitoring programs to preserve the ecological balance of the area. During the redevelopment of the site, we planted 110 metres of native hedging, providing edible berries, nuts and seeds for the wildlife, supplemented by bird feeders across the site.
Special Guests: We are also planting more Yellow Tansy plants along the river to support the endangered Tansy Beetle which lives along a 45km stretch of the River Ouse. And our unique, eco-friendly roof above Bosun’s is brimming with vegetation and pollinator-friendly plants.
Sustainable Sourcing: We prioritise sourcing products and materials from local and sustainable sources whenever possible, supporting local businesses and reducing the environmental impact of transportation and production.
Continuous Improvement: We're committed to ongoing evaluation and improvement of our sustainability practices, seeking out new technologies, innovations, and best practices to further reduce our environmental impact and promote sustainability at The Riverfront in Bishopthorpe.
By integrating these sustainability efforts into our operations and working closely with our community, we’re proud to play our part in preserving the beauty and vitality of our picturesque location for generations to come.
